Catch an early train from Milan’s Centrale Station to Como San Giovanni Station, and the journey takes about 35-40 minutes on a direct train,

From Milano Cadorna Station there are frequent regional trains to C. This station is closer to the lakeside, making it convenient to explore Como town as soon as you arrive,

The drive from Milan to Lake Como takes about an hour, and it is memorable, with winding roads and stunning views.
I recommend organizing private transportation, rather than renting a car. The roads around Lake Como are narrow, winding, and often busy, especially in peak season. Driving around the lake can be challenging for those unfamiliar with these types of roads.
Explore Como Town
The imposing medieval tower of Porta Torre is the main entrance to Como's historical city center, which is located within the medieval walls. The charm of ancient times is preserved in the city center and it is easily accessible by foot. The city market takes place along the walls on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
Walk along Como’s elegant shopping streets, and you will arrive at Piazza San Fedele.
Here, you will find the Basilica San Fedele, which historically served as the main square for the corn market. The Basilica was likely constructed in 1120 on the ruins of an earlier structure, and its completion took place several years later.
More recently, at the beginning of the 21st century, the church underwent restoration, particularly focusing on the façade and the bell tower.
Some describe the Basilica as a Neoromanesque church. It is undoubtedly worth visiting the interior to admire its many frescoes and pieces of sacred art.
Continue strolling through charming Como’s streets, and you will arrive at the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, commonly known as the Duomo di Como.
The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta
The architectural masterpiece was constructed over centuries, from the 14th to the 18th century. It stands as one of northern Italy's most significant religious landmarks.
Nestled near the shores of Lake Como, the cathedral graces the stunning Piazza Duomo.
While its dominant style is Gothic, the cathedral also showcases remarkable Romanesque, Renaissance, and Baroque elements, reflecting its rich architectural evolution.
For landscape and nature lovers, a walk along the lakeshore and a hike in the hills take the funicular railway to Brunate, a picturesque village overlooking Como. From here, enjoy panoramic views of the lake and surrounding mountains. For an even better vantage point, walk to the Volta Lighthouse, where breathtaking vistas await.
Remember that the lakeshore walk will take approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes; if you include a funicular railway trip, the total duration will be about 4 hours.
